Iftar Buffet - Celebrating with community by sharing a meal

At the end of 2023 we released a community feedback survey to learn what kind of programs Sunaltans felt we were missing. Cultural programs were at the top of the list.

We had the opportunity host our first cultural event of the year in March 2024 and offered up an Iftar Buffet to our community! Whether you were participating in Ramadan or not, all Sunaltans were invited to share a meal and learn about each other's cultures.

Commitment to regular cultural programming

Did you know that 30% of Sunaltans are newcomers and 27% of that refugees? Sunalta serves as a landing point for many people first arriving in the city and in Canada. Out of our population of newcomers, the majority of them come from Ethiopia, Eritrea, and China.

To celebrate this fact, the Sunalta Community Association has committed to hosting a series of regular cultural programs every year! In November 2024, we worked together with four residents: Letina, Fetlework, Wubalem, and Meron; to put on an East African Celebration for 80 of our community members!

We are working with a new group of residents to help us host a Lunar New Year Celebration, scheduled for February 2025.

We will also host an Indigenous celebration in May 2025!
